A voice journal that keeps only the words

Gratitude is a voice journal for iPhone and Android. You speak, your phone turns what you say into text as you say it, and the text is what stays. There is no audio file to keep, sync or lose: just your own words, a few at a time, on a list for the day.

Speak your journal

Most journaling apps start with a blank page and a blinking cursor. Gratitude starts with a question and a microphone. Tap, say one good thing from today, and it lands on today's list the moment there are words to keep. There is no save button, no transcription queue and nothing to tidy afterwards.

It asks for three small things, one at a time: a moment, a person, something you noticed on the way home. Each answer takes a breath or two, so on a busy day the whole entry is less than a minute. A journal you can keep while the kettle boils is a journal you actually keep.

An audio journal that keeps only text

Plenty of people go looking for an audio journal and then realise they never want to hear themselves played back. Gratitude is built for exactly that. Speech recognition turns your voice into text while you talk, and only the text is written down. The app has no recorder: no audio is written to the phone, uploaded, played back, synced or exported.

That keeps the journal light. Months of entries are a few pages of text that you can scroll through in a minute and take with you as a file. And what you see is what you said, in your words, not a summary of them or a guess at them.

Voice when you can, typing when you cannot

Not every minute is a talking minute. On a crowded train or next to someone asleep, type instead. Typed and spoken things sit on the same list, look the same and count the same.

Recognition uses your phone's own speech service, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German or Italian, following your phone's language. On most phones it runs on the device. If nothing was heard, nothing is kept, and you simply try again. If a word comes out wrong, edit the thing afterwards; it is only text.

Where the words go

Each day's things sit on the home screen under a short greeting, and the week shows as seven small moons that fill as you speak: a crescent for one thing, a half for two, full at three. Past days live in the archive, a calendar you can scroll back through, and on Sunday a short recap reads your week back to you in one sentence made of your own words.

Everything free works without an account, and the words stay in a database on your phone. Export hands you every word as a file whenever you like.

When you would rather be asked

Some evenings it is easier to talk with someone than into a phone. Premium adds Luna, a five minute call that asks for your three and keeps each one on today's list as you say it. It works the same way as the rest of the app: your voice becomes words, and only the words are kept.

Questions people ask

Is my voice recorded?

No. Your voice is turned into text as you speak and only the text is kept. Gratitude has no recorder, and no audio is stored, uploaded or played back, on the phone or anywhere else.

Can I type instead of speaking?

Yes. Every question can be answered by voice or by typing, and both end up as the same words on the same list.

Which languages does voice capture work in?

English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Italian. The app follows your phone's language, and recognition follows the app.

Do I need an account to use the voice journal?

No. Voice and typed capture, the archive, the Sunday recap, reminders and export are free and need no account.
